SANGHA Dance Theater has existed in many different incarnations, since I founded my first dance group, in 2001. I serve as SANGHA’s artistic director, instructor, costume designer, and choreographer.
Understanding dance is a personal journey and people dance for many reasons, I wanted to create a safe experience to learn, grow and perform- as dancers and as individuals. Sangha is a group where we share this process.
Sangha is a Sanskrit word- used to describe a ‘truth seeking community’. By tradition, the Sangha are kindred spirits, people who you can rely on in good and challenging times and who support your highest aspirations. The concept of the SANGHA resonates with me, and our collective goal as a group. We are named SANGHA to honor the intent and tradition of enlightenment through the arts.
Being blessed with dance in my life- and having pursued it, explored and shared it with so many amazing people, I’ve learned that learning, sharing, teaching life long. I strive to continue the traditions, acknowledging the value of innovation and the spirit of creation. I believe respect is essential in any pursuit, including dance.
Personally, I am not driven to dance for competitive reasons, a shared belief within SANGHA Dance Theater. We strive for personal and group excellence. I always want my dancers and students to honor the heart of why people dance- to share with one another.
I value that dance should be a fun, enjoyable experience. It is a lot of work to become a great dancer, but if it’s no longer fun, I don’t see the purpose. It’s with this mindset that SANGHA dancers are encouraged to CHOOSE how involved they want and can realistically be involved.
SANGHA Dance Theater enriches lives through action, practice, intention, community, teaching, sharing, nurturing, harmony and finding balance between creation, spiritual practice, the individual, and the group.
Comprised of long-time dancers and those newer to dance, I train SANGHA Dancers in traditional forms of Middle Eastern Dance; contemporary and fusion forms of belly dance; and improvisational and choreographic dance.
